Happy Birthday envy Magazine!
2008-07-04 - by Kerris Lacy
It’s been a whole year since envy Magazine was was first published! So while we blow out the candle on our cake, here’s the story so far, and introductions to the people who bring you the magazine each month. The beginning?
The first sight of the new addition to our family, which myself and my husband had created, took our breath away. All of the hard work and sleepless nights finally seemed to be worth it. The 'envy Magazine' child was born and we loved it! We feel just as emotional to be celebrating envy's first Birthday. A year has passed and the support for the magazine has been amazing from everyone who has taken us under their wing from fantastic stories to eventful photo shoots that have seen the poor models in not always the most glamorous places. Not forgetting, of course, our advertisers who are the ones that keep us going every month.
What made you start the magazine?
Myself and Phil have worked and developed the business because it is something we found missing in our area. We both have other businesses in Beverley and felt that the free publications that existed didn't satisfy our advertising needs and also offered absolutely no content value, we usually just throw them in the bin straight away, some quicker than others. Our aim is to bring a local magazine with a glossy national feel to the area incorporating talents that are home grown. We want to shout about the amazing people we live next door to, as we all get so caught up in our own lives. Being able to sit down with a cuppa once a month and find out about these people, businesses, communities, charities and organisations. At the same time giving the feel of a national magazine with crosswords, movies, horoscopes, gossip pages etc.
Who is envy Magazine?
Our family here at envy has changed and grown from that first issue, all the time evolving with better people coming on board. We now make 10 mugs of coffee in the morning and with the freelance work on top of that, we are a very busy place! We have Pauline Shaw, Sue Park, Christabel Dunham and Andrew Clark in the sales department who most people know and love when they get accosted by a visit.Tirelessly going out and meeting the business owners of the area and trying to accommodate their needs. Paul Lawson is the one who put the magic into the magazine. Every month he puts envy together page by page, working on each article and advert until they hit perfection. Gina Baumber is there for any of your beauty problems, if you need a questionanswering don't hesitate to get in touch and she can sort your cleansers from your leg wax!
These are the people who at some point you will come across but lets not forget the ones in the back office who we need just as much. Alex Stark runs distribution and is responsible for making sure you receive your magazine each month, all 30,000. Andy, Michael and Karl are our professional photographers, bringing you the latest looks from the fashion world. Lastly, Rachel and Margaret who every month find out what's going on in our area and beyond.
What's new with envy?
As some of you might already know, envy now has a web site. This is the labour of love of David Barr who has been working painstakingly to bring the magazine to you where ever you are. There is a mixture of each months issues so if you miss a copy don't panic, you can catch up on all the news of every issue on the website. We will also be bringing you extra photographs of events as we can't always fit them in the magazine, with a chance to purchase the pictures of your nights out. There are many articles on the site which we just cannot fit into the magazine. One of the most popular parts of the site is the What’s On Guide, there so you wont miss a thing in your local area!
So what has changed from the first issue until now?
Because we have been incredibly well received by the local community and local business owners, envy now distributes over 30,000 copies of each issue completely free, hand delivered to AB1 homes by a registered VFD distributor throughout Hull, York, Beverley, Walkington, Driffield, Cottingham, Swanland, Hessle, Kirkella, Elloughton, Welton, Brough, Melton, South Cave, Ferriby and Victoria Dock. In addition to this, copies of Envy are also available in high profile pick-up points including Asda supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, hotels, theatres and local cinemas.
And finally?
We would like to thank everyone for their support over the last year in bringing you the best free local magazine in the area. As always, if there is anything you would like to see or change in the magazine then please let us know. This is your community and your magazine so we need your input to make it work.
