The original idea for fathers day began in Washington in 1909. Sonora Smart Dodd had been raised by her father after her mother had died. She wanted to show her father how much he meant to her, as he was born in June the first fathers day was held on the 19th June 1910. In 1926 a National Fathers Day committee was formed in New York City and recognized by a Joint Resolution of congress in 1956. President of the USA Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Fathers Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. And thus fathers day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought her father and all the other fathers should be honoured like our Mothers on Mothers Day.
